The Chen Ideation and Prototyping Laboratory

The Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Ideation and Prototyping Laboratory (Chen IPL) is where researchers can access and share expertise, that nurtures innovation and learning, to build efficient, specialized electronics systems.

Chen IPL Mission:  Enable the design of prototype medical/health devices for discoveries and translation to catalyze breakthrough discoveries with real-world impact. Scope of prototypes includes neurotech, precision health, human performance, rehab, patient care, robotics, therapies, and assisted living.

  • Accelerate lab-to-real-world deployment and foster innovation.
  • Facilitate prototype system design and implementation.
  • Validate devices from lab to relevant settings and applications.
  • Train students with system-level thinking.
  • Emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration

The Chen IPL welcomes researchers from any department on campus, and even researchers external to Stanford, accommodating project needs with a tiered service and support structure depending on how much expertise is needed – from independently using the tools to requesting a turnkey solution. Stanford researchers are able to design and build a system themselves, or collaborate with IPL's experienced engineers.

Equipment

Workbenches are equipped with basic assembly and test tools, as well as small electronics consumables to enable researchers to build their own PC Boards and systems.  In addition, the following instruments are available to member researchers.
