These instructions apply to Stanford students, staff, faculty & SLAC employees working on a local project. If you are working for any external organization or are working on a project that is not based at Stanford, please follow the directions on the External Labmember webpage.
Step 1: Is nano@stanford For You?
Determine if nano@stanford has the tool(s), processes, and capabilities for your research project. Some options include:
- Review at the capabilities we have available in our different lab spaces to find some that will work for your needs.
- Highly Recommended: Discuss with a technical staff member
Our equipment has limitations regarding what it can achieve and is not suited for all projects, so it is best to discuss the feasibility of your project with one of our technical staff members before proceeding. - Review other Stanford shared facilities that may have similar or complimentary instrumentation.
Step 2: Complete STARS Safety Trainings
Please complete the list of STARS trainings that corresponds to the lab(s) that you would like to access.

Please feel free to check in with your approver to help expedite the process. (They may need to check their spam folder for the email.)
Step 5: Final nano@stanford Admin Review
Once we receive authorization from your financial approver, our nano@stanford administrative staff will review all the information and either approve or deny your request. You will be notified once our staff have processed the request.
Once approved:
- For instruments in McCullough, Moore, Shriram, Spilker, and the Deep Lab (SNSF): You can now make a Badger account. With this account, you may continue with lab required and/or instrument specific training.
